But Barry, a hoops scion with a bachelor's degree in physics and a master’s in nuclear engineering, was probably the only Team USA athlete giving a high-level work presentation from Mongolia at 2 a.m. — the afternoon back home in Florida — last month while he was also getting ready for the Olympics.

"It's definitely a grind at times," Barry, who plays 3x3, said in an interview that started 30 minutes behind schedule ... because he had to take a work call. "I'm so fortunate [my employers] are willing to work with me. That's part of the Olympic spirit to do whatever you can try to succeed and pursue that dream."

Scores of elite athletes have to put on their work boots before they lace up sneakers to run down Olympic aspirations. Sports psychologist Mark Aoyagi said the laboring athletes face a uniquely difficult challenge.

“It’s not ideal, certainly,” said Aoyagi, a professor at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology. “That’s particularly if you’re comparing yourself to other countries where some athletes don’t have jobs — they’re being paid by their government. When you’re a looking at a Russian athlete or a Chinese athlete being paid, it can be challenging.”

In stark contrast to glitzy promos touting star athletes that will fill airwaves in the coming weeks, many performers on the Paris stage will be unknown Americans who work full- or part-time jobs to support their high-level endeavors.

“How do you do it? Athletes are great at compartmentalization, keeping one part of their life and their experiences from another," Aoyagi said. "From a mental and emotional level, that’s key.”

Barry, the son of NBA Hall of Fame guard Rick Barry, has a strict regimen: up by dawn for weight training and yoga, going to L3Harris Technologies headquarters in Melbourne, Florida, for work, then off to the gym for basketball training after he punches out of the office.

The long days, Barry said, aren’t too different from his time as a College of Charleston undergrad and a University of Florida grad student, having to make the most of 24 hours while he was playing NCAA Division I basketball and taking high-level STEM classes.

"It definitely required good time-management skills," he said. "It's something I learned from college athletics. As you can imagine, a lot of those courses were challenging to take while trying to balance what's basically a full-time job of collegiate basketball. But it prepared me for the real world and being able to manage my time and really figure out how to be efficient. Sometimes you don't get much sleep, but you do what it takes."

Still, Aoyagi worries that even the most well-organized working athlete in a stress-free, non-physically-taxing job could be a step slow.

"When you're an athlete where one one-hundredth of a second is the difference from making the podium or not or the difference between gold and silver, the person who is on their feet for eight hours a day, 40 hours a week, for however many years is going to be at a disadvantage to the person who only has to worry about training and recovery," said Aoyagi, who previously worked for U.S. Track & Field.

A lip-reading professional, Jeremy Freeman, claims to have observed Prince George seemingly trying to pinch his sister, leading to Princess Charlotte letting out a yelp of discomfort and spinning around to confront him, apparently exclaiming, "ow!"Meghan Markle, who was nearby, appeared to tilt her head and smile sympathetically at Charlotte. The episode seemed to draw the ire of their grandmother, Queen Camilla, who looked displeased, gestured at Charlotte, and then whispered to her mum Catherine, the Princess of Wales: "Take her."

Other lip-readers, as mentioned in The Sun, noted that throughout the day, Charlotte seemed to be offering guidance to her brother, as noticed by observant Royal enthusiasts. At one juncture, Charlotte is believed to have advised George, with lip-readers interpreting her silent instruction as: "You need to bow," reports the Mirror.

Prince George, attired in a dark suit and tie, seemed to acknowledge his sister's reminder about the expectations of Royal etiquette. The National Hurricane Center’s cone of uncertainty has an error 100 miles wide. And with computer models kind of shifting more eastward, we could see this as a very strong hurricane closer to Port Lavaca by Monday afternoon.

As the storm gets closer to the coastline, we could really see things ramp up. At this point, the storm surge could be as high as five feet. But the bigger threat is going to be, of course, the wind.

It's important to pay close attention to the forecast because the more east it goes, the less likely we have as much rain in North Texas.

If it stays on this current track, there’s a decent chance of scattered showers and storms.

We've got rain in the forecast for your Monday, Tuesday and even into Wednesday, but the likelihood of the best rainfall is going to be for east and southeastern counties.

The amount of rainfall is pretty widespread with 5 to 10-inch rainfall totals expected. In isolated areas, more than a foot of rain will be possible.

As we get closer to home, the more east and southeast you go, the better rain coverage for us as well.

That is a lot of water in a short period of time, so it could even have some flood concerns for East Texas.

From Dallas, Fort Worth and westward, we will be able to handle it just fine.

Calling for better ties with West, Iran reformist wins presidency, Iran's reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian, who advocates improved ties with the West, on Saturday won a runoff presidential election against ultraconservative Saeed Jalili, the Interior Ministry said.

The election came against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions due to the Gaza war, a dispute with the West over Iran's nuclear programme, and domestic discontent over the state of Iran's sanctions-hit economy.

Pezeshkian received more than 16 million votes, around 54 percent, and Jalili more than 13 million, roughly 44 percent, out of about 30 million votes cast, electoral authority spokesman Mohsen Eslami said.

Voter turnout was 49.8 percent, Eslami added, up from a record low of about 40 percent during the first round.

In his first comments after winning, Pezeshkian said the vote was the start of a "partnership" with Iran's people.

"The difficult path ahead will not be smooth except with your companionship, empathy, and trust. I extend my hand to you," Pezeshkian said on social media platform X.

The death of ultraconservative president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash necessitated the election, which was not due until 2025.

Under Raisi Iran sought improved relations with China and Russia while mending ties with Arab neighbours, chiefly Saudi Arabia, to avert deeper isolation.

Saudi Arabia led Gulf states in congratulating Pezeshkian. Both Russia and China expressed hopes for further reinforcement of ties.

- Nuclear deal -

Pezeshkian is a 69-year-old heart surgeon whose only previous government experience came as health minister about two decades ago.

He has called for "constructive relations" with Western countries to "get Iran out of its isolation". He favours revival of the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and global powers.

The United States unilaterally withdrew from the accord in 2018, reimposing sanctions and leading Iran to gradually reduce commitment to its terms. The deal aimed to curb nuclear activity which Tehran maintains is for peaceful purposes.

Iran's foe the United States on Monday said it would make no difference whether Pezeshkian or Jalili won.

State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said there was no expectation the vote would "lead to a fundamental change in Iran's direction" or improvement in human rights.

There were no obvious celebrations in the country on Saturday after the final results were announced, but some Iranians voiced approval of the outcome.

"We are very happy that Mr Pezeshkian won," said Abolfazl, a 40-year-old architect who gave only his first name.

"I expected him to become the president because we really needed a literate president to solve the economic problems of the people."

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all major policy issues, congratulated Pezeshkian.

Khamenei urged him to "continue the path of Martyr Raisi and use the country's many capacities, especially the revolutionary and faithful youth, for the comfort of the people and the progress of the country."

He accused "enemies of the Iranian nation" of being behind a "scheme of boycotting the elections."

After more than one million ballots were spoiled in the first round, the figure in the runoff stood at more than 600,000, according to figures provided by Eslami.

- 'Conservative dominance' -

The ballot came with some Iranians having lost faith in the system, according to analysts.

"I don't have any feelings" about Pezeshkian's win, said Donya, a 53-year-old babysitter who doesn't know "whether the situation is going to get better or worse."

Donya, who gave only her first name, added: "I didn't vote and I don't have any feeling for Mr Pezeshkian or anyone else."

All candidates were approved by Iran's Guardian Council and Pezeshkian was the lone reformist allowed to stand.

Political expert Ali Vaez, from the International Crisis Group think-tank, said on X that Pezeshkian will face challenges in implementing his platform because of "continued conservative dominance of other state institutions & limits of presidential authority".

Jalili, 58, an Iranian nuclear negotiator until 2013, is known for his uncompromising anti-West stance. After his defeat he urged his supporters to help Pezeshkian in his new role.

Hassan Rouhani, a moderate in office until Raisi's victory in 2021, congratulated Pezeshkian on his win.

Rouhani said voters had shown "they want a serious change in the state of governance in the country." They had voted "for constructive interaction with the world" and for revival of the nuclear deal, he added.

Pezeshkian vowed to ease long-standing internet restrictions and to "fully" oppose police patrols enforcing the mandatory headscarf for women, a high-profile issue since the death in police custody in 2022 of Mahsa Amini.

The 22-year-old Iranian Kurd had been detained for an alleged breach of the dress code and her death sparked months of nationwide unrest.

As IceCream Convos reports, in a recent livestream, Jenkins said, “Keke did not overdose, Keke did not take her own life. Keke loved life. Keke was not ready to leave life. She wasn’t ready to leave her children, her husband or her family.”

Jenkins seemed to imply that KeKe died from carbon monoxide poisoning. 

“Last night, she turned her car off and she fell asleep,” Jenkins explained. “Her car was not functioning [and there] was something already wrong with her car.” According to Jenkins’s comments, it seems likely that KeKe returned home, parked her car, and inadvertently fell asleep with the engine running and the garage door closed. The malfunction in her vehicle appears to have tragically resulted in her death.

“So, seven-something this morning, her husband goes to the garage. He sees Keke, what he thinks is asleep in the car. He tries to get her attention. He opens [the car] up. She isn’t breathing. Her husband, her life partner, her best friend tried to bring his wife back, the mother of his children, and he couldn’t,” said Jenkins.

“Keke passed from carbon monoxide poisoning. That’s it. That is all,” she added. 

Jenkins stressed that KeKe had no intention of ending her own life.“My sister didn’t want to leave this Earth, she didn’t want to leave her kids. She didn’t want to leave her husband,” she continued. “There was no turmoil going on in her life. She had a lot of great things to look forward to.”Earlier this week, Jabbar’s family confirmed her passing in a statement shared on July 2 (Tuesday), read by YouTuber Marcella Speaks.

“It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Keke. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded in love,” Speaks said during a YouTube livestream 

“She was a mom, a sister, and a great friend, full of life, love, and laughter. She will surely be missed. At this time, we are asking for respect and privacy in our moment of grief while we process this great loss,” Speaks continued.

Stabbing leaves 2 dead, 3 wounded in Huntington Beach hours after 4th of July celebration, Two people were killed and three others were wounded during a violent stabbing in Huntington Beach late Thursday evening, just hours after the city's popular Fourth of July celebration. 

It happened at around 11:15 p.m., when police were sent to the area near 16th Street and Pelican Avenue after learning of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department. 

Circumstances leading up to the attack remain unclear, and HBPD Major Crimes Unit personnel could be seen scouring the area early Friday morning. 

Detectives say that the attack left two people dead. Neither has been identified. 

Three others were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. 

Just before 7 a.m., investigators said that one person had been taken into custody. They later identified him as Logan Kelly, a 26-year-old Huntington Beach resident. He was booked on charges of murder and attempted murder. 

People living near where the incident happened began to learn the news as they started their days Friday morning, which many called shocking. 

"I've never experienced that before," said Jack Behimer, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years. "I mean it's always been kind of a crazy town on Fourth of July, back in the 90s there were some issues down here, but not since then that I'm aware of anyway."

Here are the big winners and losers from a night that upended Westminster.

Liz Truss became prime minister 668 days ago. Then, within seven weeks, her own MPs had removed her.

On Friday morning, her constituents in South West Norfolk did the same, a fate not suffered by a former prime minister since 1935.

Ms Truss saw her majority of around 23,000 votes vanish and she was defeated by Labour. There were only 630 votes in it.

Penny Mordaunt - the leader of the House of Commons and once a candidate to be prime minister - saw her majority of more than 15,000 in Portsmouth North overturned by Labour.

She had hoped her personal profile - generated in part by her ceremonial sword-wielding role during the Coronation of King Charles III - would mean her beating the national swing against her party, but Labour won narrowly.

It was widely expected she would play a big role in a future Tory leadership contest but she will now no longer be in the Commons.

Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer unseated Labour shadow cabinet member Thangham Debbonaire in Bristol Central.

Her party's other leader Adrian Ramsey was also elected in the rural Waveney Valley seat

The Greens won four seats overall, their best ever performance at a general election, and was on course to win around two million votes.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps held government posts for the majority of the Conservatives' 14 years in power.

In the early hours of Friday, he saw a majority of more than 10,000 votes vanish and Labour take his Welwyn Hatfield seat, becoming the most senior cabinet minister to lose.

Other cabinet ministers removed from the Commons include: Veterans' Minister Johnny Mercer, Education Secretary Gillian Keegan, Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer and Mr Sunak's Chief Whip Simon Hart.

It was eighth time lucky for Nigel Farage, who was elected to the Commons for the first time, with a majority of more than 8,000 in Clacton.

His comeback to the frontline of politics transformed this election and saw Reform UK put on course to be the third-largest party in the country by number of votes, with Mr Farage vowing to "stun" the electorate with Reform's next moves.

The surge in his party's fortunes since he joined the fray also saw ex-Tory MP Lee Anderson and Reform co-founder Richard Tice elected to the Commons.

Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg is perhaps the most recognisable face among influential Tory backbenchers to lose their seat.

The staunch Brexiteer went into the election with a majority of more than 16,000 votes in his North East Somerset and Hanham seat.

Before his result was announced, he told the BBC his party had taken its “core vote for granted”.

On a night when Sir Keir hoped to confirm a definitive break with the past for Labour, his predecessor had other ideas.

Jeremy Corbyn ran as an independent in Islington North - the constituency he has represented since 1983 - after being thrown out of Labour over his response to antisemitism.

Labour ran a candidate against him but Mr Corbyn's local popularity meant he won in the north London seat by more than 7,000 votes.

One of the big questions arising from the election result is what type of Conservative Party emerges from the worst result in its modern history.

Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman is expected to be one of those seeking to shape where the party goes next, along with the likes of James Cleverly and Kemi Badenoch.

Speaking after her result was confirmed, she said: "I'm sorry that my party didn't listen to you. The Conservative Party has let you down."

Jonathan Ashworth was almost certain to be a leading figure in the new Labour government.

Instead, the former shadow paymaster general and a key Starmer lieutenant lost his Leicester South constituency to independent candidate Shockat Adam.

The seat has a significant Muslim population and a large part of Mr Adam's campaign focused on the situation in Gaza. Other Labour candidates saw their vote squeezed in areas with similar demographics.

Sinn Féin won more constituencies than any other party in Northern Ireland, in an election which saw the Democratic Unionist Party suffer.

It means the republican party - which does not take its seats in the Commons - has been the largest party in both the most recent Westminster and Stormont elections.

Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill was seen celebrating alongside the party's president Mary Lou McDonald as the final tallies were read out.

Liberal Democrat Sir Ed Davey's decision to bungee jump, log flume and paddle board his way through the campaign might have split opinion, but it has paid dividends.

The party pulled off its target of becoming the third largest party in the Commons, with around 3.5m votes across the country.

Its gains predominantly came in the south east of England, where it targeted Conservative candidates.

Former Labour minister Douglas Alexander is perhaps the most recognisable face among the candidates who demolished the SNP's near-monopoly in Scotland.

He was elected back to the Commons after winning nearly 50% of the vote in Lothian East.

The SNP has lost around 40 of the seats it held before the election, prompting its leader John Swinney to say the party had "failed to convince" the people of Scotland on independence.

That judicial election, the most expensive in U.S. history, flipped the court to a 4-3 liberal majority after 15 years of conservative control, giving Democrats an advantage in legal battles over abortion, voting rights and electoral maps.

The ruling clears the way for municipal clerks to use ballot drop boxes during the state's Aug. 13 primaries and the Nov. 5 presidential election, in which Wisconsin has become a key battleground.

In 2016, Republican former President Donald Trump won the state by fewer than 25,000 votes out of 2.8 million cast, and in 2020, President Joe Biden, a Democrat, carried Wisconsin by fewer than 21,000 votes out of 3.2 million cast.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Democrats pushed voters to use drop boxes to cast ballots and have remained supportive of them. Republicans, by contrast, have sought to limit the use of absentee ballots after the 2020 election.

Under its prior conservative majority, the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 2022 held that according to state law, ballots had to be returned to a clerk's office or another designated site, not an "inanimate object" such as an unstaffed box.

That holding was defended in court by the state's Republican-led legislature.

But Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, a liberal, said on Friday that the earlier decision misinterpreted a Wisconsin law that requires absentee voting be "carefully regulated" by concluding it required the court to take a "skeptical" view of the procedure.

"It is not up to this court to 'regulate' absentee voting," Bradley wrote in an opinion joined by the court's three other liberal justices including Protasiewicz.

All three conservative justices dissented, including Justice Rebecca Bradley, who accused the liberal majority of overturning the 2022 decision because they "believe using drop boxes is good policy, and one they hope will aid their preferred political party."

Democratic Governor Tony Evers, who filed a brief supporting the progressive groups pursuing the case, in a statement called the ruling a "victory for our democracy," saying that drop-box voting is "safe, secure, and legal."

Use of drop boxes will remain up to the discretion of local officials. But cities like Milwaukee and Madison are now expected to use them, said David Fox, a lawyer for the plaintiffs.

Officials in Los Angeles had come by earlier to warn him that he could face arrest if he didn't move his belongings.

They told him about the recent Supreme Court opinion that opened the door for cities and states across the US to punish anyone sleeping outdoors — the most significant ruling on homelessness since at least the 1980s, when many experts say the modern US homeless crisis began.

It's added to the lengthy list of worries Anthony says he already has.

"I’m just trying to survive,” he told the BBC while lying down in his tent, using a blue backpack as a pillow.

A black trash bag sits inside, filled with what belongings he can carry as he moves from one area to the next.

“Some nights I don’t get no sleep,” he said. “I’ve been tired all day. I just want to lay somewhere comfortable and get a good nap in. And that’s it. I am not bothering nobody.”

Moments later, Anthony packed up his tent and went looking for a new place to call home.

The high court’s ruling is already having a ripple effect on cities across the country, which have been emboldened to take harsher measures to clear out homeless camps that have grown in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Many US cities have been wrestling with how to combat the growing crisis. The issue has been at the heart of recent election cycles on the West Coast, where officials have poured record amounts of money into creating shelters and building affordable housing.

Leaders face mounting pressure as long-term solutions - from housing and shelters to voluntary treatment services and eviction help - take time.

“It’s not easy and it will take a time to put into place solutions that work, so there’s a little bit of political theatre going on here," Scout Katovich, an attorney who focuses on these issues for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), told the BBC.

"Politicians want to be able to say they’re doing something,”

The problem, Ms Katovich and other advocates say, is arresting or fining the homeless will only worsen the problem.

“This tactic simply kicks the can down the road. Sure, you might clean up a street but the people you arrest will surely be back.”

Homeless numbers hit new records in 2023

The high court's ruling last week didn’t mandate how cities and governments should handle homelessness - but it gave communities leeway to take more severe measures without the fear of legal recourse.

The case began in the small city of Grants Pass, Oregon, with a population of around 40,000. Over the last 20 years the city doubled in size, but its supply of affordable and public housing did not keep up. Housing prices skyrocketed and the number of homeless grew.

Elected leaders passed laws allowing the city to issue $295 (£230) fines - or 20-day jail sentences for repeat offenses - to unhoused people sleeping or camping in public. Three homeless people sued the city in 2018 after they received multiple citations they were unable to pay.

An appeals court found such laws virtually banned homelessness and amounted to cruel and unusual punishment.

The Supreme Court finally ruled that cities were clear to prohibit homeless people sleeping outside in public places.

“A handful of federal judges cannot begin to ‘match’ the collective wisdom the American people possess in deciding ‘how best to handle’ a pressing social question like homelessness,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the majority's opinion.

Theane Evangelis argued this case before the Supreme Court on behalf of Grants Pass.

She says city officials had their hands tied because they could not force anyone into a shelter. She argues those who refuse to use the services offered end up staying in encampments.

“Living in tents is not a compassionate solution, and it's not treating people with dignity. And so the Supreme Court's decision was remarkable in the degree to which it listened to those cities,” she said.

Leaders in Grants Pass say they plan to examine the Supreme Court opinion before making a plan on whether to enforce its ban on encampments.

The ruling comes at a critical time for the unhoused.

Last year, the US tracked the highest numbers of homeless people since 2007 - when the US Department of Housing and Urban Development started tracking such data.

There were 653,104 homeless people counted as part of the agency's yearly homeless assessment in 2023. That's a nearly 11% increase from the year prior.

Advocates work to steer away from arrests

The ACLU has been tracking the reaction to the decision by city leaders across the US.

It has already sent a letter to Manchester, New Hampshire, after the mayor promised to ban encampments to “make our streets safe, clear and passable”.

Other city leaders, like the mayor in Lancaster, California, have promised to “be much more aggressive” against encampments in neighbourhoods and near stores.

Mayor R Rex Parris told the Los Angeles Times “we’re going to be moving them really fast”.

State lawmakers in Oregon also seem poised to look at changing laws that will give them greater latitude to rid homeless camps, local media reported.

In Spokane, Washington, leaders are asking authorities to dismantle more camps.

But fining people who don’t have the means for housing worsens their finances, advocates say.

Arresting them can make it harder to find a job or housing, experts told the BBC.

“There is mounds and volumes of evidence showing that having an unpaid citation and a warrant out for arrest, let alone in incarceration, prevents people from accessing housing, jobs in other places," Chris Herring, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of California in Los Angeles told the BBC.

"It actually prevents people from accessing shelter.”

Not all cities have welcomed the court decision.

In Los Angeles, the mayor called the ruling “disappointing” and vowed to continue investing in affordable housing, voluntary treatment and eviction protections.

Days after the opinion, the city released a homeless count showing the first drop in nearly six years.

Advocates say it is a prime example that other cities can learn from.

“Real change takes time,” Sasha Morozov, a regional director for PATH, a leading homeless provider in the Los Angeles area, told the BBC.

Ms Morozov noted, though, outreach teams in the greater Los Angeles area are still working to inform those living on the streets about the Supreme Court’s ruling. Teams are also preparing for increased demand for legal services.

Jailing the homeless? ‘At least I’ll have a bed’

Around the corner from Anthony, Topher Williams, 28, calls a makeshift tent on a sidewalk home.

Black and blue tarps are tied to tree branches and street parking poles. Plywood boards line the edges of the structure, which he calls a three-room apartment.

Mr Williams, who told the BBC he was an Army veteran, has been living on the streets for four years. An unlucky combination of medical expenses and the pandemic's economic struggles left him without a job or shelter.

Like Anthony, he’s frustrated at the lack of compassion from city officials and law enforcement.

“It's mind blowing the way people look at us. The way people straight up treat us like we're like less than animals. And they have no idea,” he said, tears welling in his eyes.

“I served eight years in the military. I did two tours of duty. I gave the ultimate sacrifice fighting for this country, and to be treated like I’m a second-class citizen is wild.”

Asked if he was scared about potential arrests, he said it's part of this way of life.

“We’ve got a lot that we have to deal with already. A lot of the things are kind of stressful. But I don’t worry about things until they start affecting me.”

Like Topher, Anthony said being arrested may not be the worst outcome.

“At least I’ll have a bed and maybe I’ll be in the system and get the right kind of help.”

St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Venezuela reported three deaths each, while one person died in Jamaica.

The storm destroyed almost every home on two small islands in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Mayreau and Union.

Strong winds and dangerous storm surges and waves are expected to hit the Yucatan Peninsula by early on Friday, the National Hurricane Center in the US forecasted.

The hurricane is expected to bring 10cm (4in) to 15cm (6in) of rain into Friday across the peninsula, with some places getting up to 10in.Here in the capital, Kingston, while the winds were extremely strong, they were not the hurricane gusts that were expected. But the hours of heavy rain are a real concern, especially on farmland where flooding has been reported.

One resident of a rural farming community told the Reuters news agency: "It's terrible. Everything's gone. I'm in my house and I'm scared."

"It's a disaster," said Amoy Wellington, who lives in the southern parish of St Elizabeth.

On Wednesday night I was able to go outside briefly to move my car away from overhanging trees.

A full-length mirror was lying next to the car - it had probably blown off someone's balcony, a reminder that unexpected objects suddenly become missiles in winds that strong.

Jamaican energy provider JPS said that 65% - or about 400,000 of its customers - were without power on Thursday morning.

The hurricane had delivered “a most devastating blow” to parts of the island, said the MP for St Elizabeth South Western.

Posting on X, Floyd Green said in his constituency “significant numbers of roofs [have been] lost, houses destroyed, trees uprooted, light poles downed, almost all roads are impassable”.

A destructive wildfire that engulfed buildings and forced 29,000 people to evacuate the area near Oroville in Butte County, Calif., slowed enough on Thursday that most residents were allowed to return to their homes, officials said.

Fire crews battled flames overnight, and on Thursday morning, the spread of the blaze, named the Thompson fire, remained relatively stable, at around 3,700 acres burned. The fierce winds that initially drove the fire weakened through the night.

On Thursday afternoon, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office lifted evacuation orders and warnings for more than 20 zones, and downgraded evacuation orders to warnings for roughly another 20, allowing more than 26,000 residents who had been displaced by the fire to return. About 2,780 people remain under mandatory evacuation orders.

So far, four firefighters have been injured and four structures destroyed as a result of the blaze, according to Cal Fire’s incident report. The fire has also consumed vehicles, based on news coverage.

“Overall, things are looking pretty good,” said Kevin Colburn, a spokesman for Cal Fire. “The fire is not doing what it was doing on the first day. It’s not burning with a rapid rate of spread. It’s pretty much staying in the footprint that it’s in.”

Mr. Colburn added that while officials were feeling “more confident” about the slowing spread of the fire and the ability of firefighters to contain it, there was still a lot of work to do, and the situation could change. As of Thursday morning, the fire was 7 percent contained.

Some people who returned to the area on Thursday remained uneasy. Angel Williams, the assistant manager at Foothill Boarding and Grooming in Oroville, spent the morning moving a group of dogs back into kennels after they were evacuated on Tuesday.

The nearby hills were charred black, and a hot, smoky breeze moved through the complex. The facility was not damaged, but Ms. Williams was trying to reduce the number of animals in her care, sending dogs to the owners’ emergency contacts in case the situation changed.

“We’re still on standby,” Ms. Williams said, noting that the fire was still burning only a few miles away. “I’ve had a massive headache all day because I’m so worried.”

Much of California is experiencing a brutal heat wave that was not expected to ease until next week. Temperatures in Oroville on Thursday were expected to reach 110 degrees, with even hotter ones expected in the coming days. The rising heat, coupled with low humidity, could contribute to increased fire activity, officials said. On Wednesday, two smaller fires ignited within a few miles of the blaze near Oroville, but they were quickly contained.

Butte County has been the scene of a number of destructive fires in recent years, including the Camp fire, in 2018, one of the deadliest wildfires in American history. It killed 85 people and almost completely destroyed the town of Paradise, about 20 miles north of Oroville.

With just one climb near the beginning of the 101.6-mile route from Mâcon to Dijon through the Burgundy wine region of France, Stage 6 was among the flattest days of the 2024 Tour de France, which set up the riders perfectly for the ensuing sprint finish. 

Intermarché-Wanty’s Biniam Girmay, who leads the contest for the green jersey (points classification), managed a runner-up finish after making history as the first Eritrean and Black rider to win a Tour de France stage on Monday. 

“At the start of the Tour the green jersey was not an objective, now it’s 100%,” Girmay said. 

Meanwhile, British sprinter Mark Cavendish finished in 20th place after his record-breaking 35th career Tour de France stage win Wednesday.

A month after kicking off her last comedy tour, DeGeneres' stand-up gig appears to have hit an unexpected hiccup. Ticketmaster issued an "event canceled" update to fans who purchased tickets to four upcoming shows.

The canceled events include shows scheduled for July 10 in Dallas, July 21 in San Francisco, July 23 in Seattle, and August 11 in Chicago. The ticketing site did not explain what went wrong but noted the problem came from DeGeneres' corner.

"Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event. You don't need to do a thing. We'll issue a refund to the original method of payment used at the time of purchase as soon as funds are received from the Event Organizer," Ticketmaster explained in their statement.

The site assured fans that a refund should appear in their accounts "within 14-21 days" unless they purchased the tickets from a third party. In that case, "the refund will go to the fan who originally purchased the tickets from Ticketmaster," per In Touch.

When DeGeneres' North American tour was announced in late May, it was promoted as fans' "last opportunity" to witness the 66-year-old in action. The 27-show gig was set to "final curtain call," with her August 16 and 17 shows in Minneapolis to be taped.

At the time, Netflix's VP of Stand-Up and Comedy Formats, Robbie Praw, praised DeGeneres as an icon, saying: "She is a true legend and pioneer in so many ways. We can't wait to bring fans another one of her hilarious comedy specials later this year."

Apart from being her last tour, the gig also marked a significant achievement in DeGeneres' return to comedy after her eponymous talk show ended in 2022. As stated, she quit showbiz following toxic workplace allegations.

DeGeneres announced her decision to end her long-running talk show in May 2021, a year after former employers slammed her with negative reviews.

Their allegations included claims of racial microaggressions, penalizations for taking medical leaves, and fear of retaliation for raising complaints.

In April, the media personality reflected on how she lost her talk show following the allegations on one of her comedy stops. "What else can I tell you? Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There's no mean people in show business," she said.

"The hate went on for a long time, and I would try to avoid looking at the news. The 'be kind' girl wasn't kind. That was the headline," DeGeneres continued, adding, "Had I ended my show by saying, 'Go f-ck yourself,' people would've been pleasantly surprised."

Despite trying to address the situation humorously, DeGeneres could not help but stress how traumatic the allegations were for her. She said, "Honestly, I'm making jokes about what happened to me, but it was devastating, really."

"I just hated the way the show ended. I love that show so much, and I just hated that the last time people would see me is that way," the 66-year-old lamented, noting that her wife, Portia de Rossi, bore the brunt of it.

According to Liahna Bertels, she was working her shift last Friday at the Fish and Company Restaurant in Camdenton when the assault happened.

Bertels said she was trying to do the right thing by getting a group to pay their bill.

According to the waitress, the customers in question got angry when the food they ordered was taking too long and she didn’t serve a drink to one of them who didn’t have identification with them.

She said the group decided to leave after their order was placed even though she offered to pack the food in to-go boxes.

Surveillance video from the restaurant showed the group leaving and walking down the dock to a boat.

Bertels said she caught up to the group to remind them they didn’t pay, but they grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the Lake of the Ozarks before taking off.

“When I hit the water, they decided to start laughing and cheering, which really hurt,” she said. “I was crying and bawling in the water and I didn’t know what to do.”

Fish and Company General Manager Sean Dolven said they’ve made changes because of what happened.

“We’ve kind of got it now to where if you’re going to chase somebody down, let somebody know and take somebody with you,” Dolven said. “Either way. That way there’s somebody there that can see what’s going on because sometimes the cameras don’t catch everything.”

Bertels pulled herself onto a swim platform on a docked boat after about 10 minutes.

The Camden County Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating the incident but so far hasn’t been able to identify anyone in the group from the surveillance video seen.

The sheriff’s office said it is a misdemeanor assault case, and thinks the suspects are from out of state.

The customers’ bill was about $150.
